Why are communities banning plastic grocery bags?

Plastic Grocery Bags

Some cities, most notably in California, have banned the use of plastic grocery bags. Customers must buy a paper bag. This is seen by many as a way to force consumers into considering the harm that plastic grocery bags do to the environment. Challenging this is the plastics industry, which claims that there is no proof of this apparent harm.

Plastic grocery bags can be used in other useful ways. They can be used as sandwich wrap, a trash bag, as a carry-all beach bag and for organizing small items. These single-use bags are free and convenient at grocery stores, and many people prefer them.

Besides the plastic bag manufacturers, others are questioning the virtue of using re-usable bags. Although re-usable bags may have a fabric cover, they also might contain some plastic in them. Others wonder about food safety when re-using the same bag, which may harbor bacteria after repeated use.
